The Astrology of Depression

Generally depression is associated with the planetary influences of Saturn.  However, just as there are nuances to depression it has occurred to me to look into the nuances of all shadow sides of the planets.  Let’s begin with the Sun. 

The Sun and Depression

 The Sun is the life-giving energy; it is a powerfully positive life-affirming frequency.  The shadow side of the Sun seems to be egotism.  For example:

 The Aries Sun when unconscious is a show off. 

The Taurus Sun hordes to hide depression,

The Gemini Sun is a know it all when out of balance,

The Cancer Sun is a mother/smother when imbalanced. 

Leo’s use braggadocio to cover up an inner self doubt. 

Virgo’s criticize others to avoid their inner voice which tells them they are super procrastinating, when depressed. 

Libra’s seek out vain relationships  to approve their superficiality.  Scorpios, when unable to feel the depths of their being, either seek out power trips or sexual flirtations.

 Sadges travel and philosophize instead of laughing when depressed.  Capricorn’s pretend they know all the answers and the true path.  Aquarians snub you when they are insecure. 

Pisces daydream, drink, drug or hopefully compose beautiful music

The Moon and Depression

 

The dysfunction of the Moon.   When the Lunar frequency is unintegrated or fully expressed it creates a depression which manifests as moodiness.   Emotional expression as well as the nurturing of self and others, are the activities of the Moon.  The Moon is Great Cosmic Mother energies.  We must use the Lunar frequency to nurture and allow ourselves to be truly nurtured.  When conscious the Lunar function helps us to see the POSITIVE flow of the Universe.  When shut down the Lunar energies illumine ferocity, ugliness and madness.  Mantra:  The provident universe is conspiring to shower us with blessings!

Venus is the planet of happiness. 

Naturally one is not always happy.  When Venus is retrograde, by transit, for example it is time to redefine happiness for ourselves.  We may expand or limit those people, activities and situations in order to do so.  Low self worth issues may be prevalent with typical low seratonin and other endorphines when Venus’s energies are stuck.

 

Mars is the planetary frequency that regulates energy.

If our energy is stuck, or depleted we will become depressed.  I also like to call Mars the planet of ‘doing the right thing.’  After a while if our actions are contrary to the needs of our soul, we may also become depressed.  Mars dysfunctions often lead to temper problems which are often not diagnosed as depression, but mask deep unresolved masochistic and sadistic tendencies.

 

Jupiter is the planet of greater happiness. 


However, if we are excessive in our behavior or thinking we can also find ourselves facing the shadow of these energies.  I have seen a lot of so called newagers with prominent Jupiter’s who are bliss addicts, masking heavy depression and social alienation.  This type of depression is often manic, as Jupiter’s frequency is still so optimistic.

 

Saturn is best known as the planet whose frequency can deliver the blues. 

Saturn is the planet of the truth and beauty.  And of course not everything we encounter in life is beautiful, and we don’t always deal with the truth.  In fact having to separate the wheat from the chaff is Saturn’s job.  When we refuse to responsibly address the tasks at hand, we may become depressed.  That is why hard work is so often a good cure for the blues.  Saturn’s magnetic influence seems to shut down energy creating extreme depression

 

Uranus relates with themes of awakening and the notion of “freedom.”

  If we feel bound, or we refuse to wake up to the truth of situations the type of depression that Uranus hurls our way is quite radical.  Uranus’s frequencies tend to disable the norm so that you cannot hold onto old patterns.  However the manic depression that can be experienced under these situations can be quite extreme.

 

Neptune is the best at masking depression.

  Those charts I have had the benefit of studying over the years of  Newagers and “meditators” have powerful Neptune’s.  These folks are generally nothing more than bliss addicts.  Although this is healthier for the body than alcohol or drug dependency, in terms of depression we are dealing with a similar dysfunction.  Neptune’s energies must be expressed creatively and with inspiration in order to keep the psyche healthy.  Renunciation and meditation are not the answer to a healthy Neptune.

 

Pluto is tricky.

  I believe that we are undergoing a transitional time as a society.  As we slowly leave patriarchal hierarchical tyranny behind and return to a balance between the male and the female (think yin/yang symbol), Pluto is our guide.  Those who cannot respond to the self-empowering demands of Pluto’s frequencies are often found battling against outer authorities as they search for meaning, godot and God.
